Trigonometric ratios

If the hypotenuse of a right-angled isosceles triangle is 2, what is the length of each of the other sides?

Worked solution (try it first)

Isosceles means the two shorter sides are equal.
Call each one $a$ .
Pythagoras: $a^2 + a^2 = 2^2$ , so $2a^2 = 4$ and $a^2 = 2$ .
So $a = \sqrt2$ , option A.
