If three numbers $p$ , $q$ , $r$ are in the ratio $6 : 4 : 5$ , find the value of $\dfrac{3p - q}{4q + r}$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Only the ratio matters, so take $p = 6$ , $q = 4$ and $r = 5$ .
Top: $3p - q = 18 - 4 = 14$ .
Bottom: $4q + r = 16 + 5 = 21$ .
So the value is $\frac{14}{21} = \frac23$ , option B.
