If the function f(x)=x3+2x2+qx−6f(x) = x^3 + 2x^2 + qx - 6 is divisible by x+1x + 1, find qq.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. Divisible by x+1x + 1 means f(−1)=0f(-1) = 0, by the factor theorem.
  2. f(−1)=−1+2−q−6=−5−qf(-1) = -1 + 2 - q - 6 = -5 - q.
  3. Set it to 0: q=−5q = -5, option A.
