Find the equation of the set of points which are equidistant from the parallel lines $x = 1$ and $x = 7$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

$x = 1$ and $x = 7$ are vertical lines, 6 units apart.
The points equidistant from them lie on the vertical line halfway between.
Halfway between 1 and 7 is $\frac{1 + 7}{2} = 4$ .
So the locus is $x = 4$ , option D.
