The midpoint of $P(x, y)$ and $Q(8, 6)$ is $(5, 8)$ . Find $x$ and $y$ .

The midpoint is the average of the ends: $\frac{x + 8}{2} = 5$ and $\frac{y + 6}{2} = 8$ .
Double each: $x + 8 = 10$ and $y + 6 = 16$ .
So $x = 2$ and $y = 10$ , option A.
