Linear & simultaneous equations

The sum of four consecutive integers is 34. Find the least of these numbers.

Worked solution (try it first)

Let the least integer be $n$ .
The four are $n$ , $n + 1$ , $n + 2$ and $n + 3$ , with sum $4n + 6$ .
So $4n + 6 = 34$ .
Take 6 from both sides: $4n = 28$ .
Divide by 4: $n = 7$ , option A.
(The numbers are 7, 8, 9 and 10.)
