Find the remainder when $2x^3 - 11x^2 + 8x - 1$ is divided by $x + 3$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

By the remainder theorem, the remainder on dividing by $x + 3$ is $f(-3)$ .
$f(-3) = 2(-27) - 11(9) + 8(-3) - 1$ , which is $-54 - 99 - 24 - 1$ .
So the remainder is $-178$ , option D.
