Find the value of $u$ if $y - 1$ is a factor of $y^3 + 4y^2 + uy - 6$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

By the factor theorem, $y - 1$ is a factor, so the expression is 0 at $y = 1$ .
$1 + 4 + u - 6 = 0$ , so $u - 1 = 0$ and $u = 1$ , option D.
