Coordinate geometry

Find the equation of a straight line passing through the point $(-1, 4)$ and parallel to the line $y = 3x + 2$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Parallel lines have the same gradient, so $m = 3$ .
Use $y - y_1 = m(x - x_1)$ : $y - 4 = 3(x + 1)$ .
Expand: $y = 3x + 7$ , so $y - 3x = 7$ , option B.
