Find the gradient of a straight line joining the points $A(3, -5)$ and $B(1, 3)$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Gradient $= \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}$ .
The rise is $3 - (-5) = 8$ and the run is $1 - 3 = -2$ .
So the gradient is $\frac{8}{-2} = -4$ , option A.
