Linear & simultaneous equations

Solve the simultaneous equations $x + 2y = -4$ , $2x + 3y = -5$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Make $x$ the subject of the first equation: $x = -4 - 2y$ .
Substitute into the second: $2(-4 - 2y) + 3y = -5$ , so $-8 - y = -5$ .
Add 8 to both sides: $-y = 3$ , so $y = -3$ .
Then $x = -4 + 6 = 2$ .
So $x = 2$ , $y = -3$ , option C.
