A body of mass 18 kg 18\text{ kg} 18 kg is suspended by an inextensible string from a rigid support and is pulled by a horizontal force F F F until the angle of inclination of the string to the vertical is 35 ∘ 35^\circ 3 5 ∘ . If the system is in equilibrium, calculate the:
(a) (b) Worked solution (try it first) The weight is
18 × 10 = 180 N 18 \times 10 = 180\text{ N} 18 × 10 = 180 N .
The string is at
35 ∘ 35^\circ 3 5 ∘ to the vertical.
Up:
T cos 35 ∘ = 180 T\cos35^\circ = 180 T cos 3 5 ∘ = 180 .
Across:
T sin 35 ∘ = F T\sin35^\circ = F T sin 3 5 ∘ = F .
(a) Divide:
F = 180 tan 35 ∘ F = 180\tan35^\circ F = 180 tan 3 5 ∘ ≈ 126.04 N \approx 126.04\text{ N} ≈ 126.04 N .
(b) T = 180 cos 35 ∘ T = \dfrac{180}{\cos35^\circ} T = cos 3 5 ∘ 180 ≈ 219.74 N \approx 219.74\text{ N} ≈ 219.74 N .
Watch out
The angle is from the vertical: the upward part of T T T is T cos 35 ∘ T\cos35^\circ T cos 3 5 ∘ . Report a problem with this question
