WAEC 2022 · Paper 1 · Q17

Find the value of xx such that 1x+43x−56x+1=0\frac1x + \frac{4}{3x} - \frac{5}{6x} + 1 = 0.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. The LCM of the denominators xx, 3x3x and 6x6x is 6x6x.
  2. Multiply every term by 6x6x, including the 1: 6+8−5+6x=06 + 8 - 5 + 6x = 0.
  3. Collect the numbers: 9+6x=09 + 6x = 0, so 6x=−96x = -9.
  4. Divide by 6: x=−96=−32x = -\frac96 = -\frac32, option C.
