Solve $x + y = \frac32$ and $x - y = \frac52$ . Use your result to find $2y + x$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Add the two equations so $y$ cancels: $2x = \frac32 + \frac52 = 4$ , so $x = 2$ .
Put $x = 2$ into $x + y = \frac32$ : $y = \frac32 - 2 = -\frac12$ .
So $2y + x = -1 + 2 = 1$ , option C.
