In a racing competition, Musa covered $5x$ km in the first hour and $(x + 10)$ km in the next hour. He was second to Ngozi, who covered a total of 118 km in the two hours. Which of the following inequalities is correct?

Worked solution (try it first)

Add the two hours: Musa covered $5x + (x + 10) = 6x + 10$ km.
He came second to Ngozi, so he covered less than her 118 km: $6x + 10 < 118$ .
Subtract 10 from both sides: $6x < 108$ .
Divide by 6: $x < 18$ .
A distance must be positive, so $x > 0$ as well.
So $0 < x < 18$ , option E.
