If $y = \dfrac{x}{x - 3} + \dfrac{x}{x + 4}$ , find $y$ when $x = -2$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

First fraction at $x = -2$ : $\frac{-2}{-2 - 3} = \frac{-2}{-5}$ , which is $\frac25$ (negative over negative is positive).
Second fraction: $\frac{-2}{-2 + 4} = \frac{-2}{2} = -1$ .
So $y = \frac25 - 1 = -\frac35$ , option A.
