Solid mensuration

An open rectangular box is made of wood 2 cm thick. If the internal dimensions of the box are 50 cm long, 36 cm wide and 20 cm deep, what is the volume of wood in the box?

Worked solution (try it first)

External size: add 2 cm on each side of the length and width, but only the base on the height (the box is open): $54 \times 40 \times 22 = 47\,520\text{ cm}^3$ .
Internal volume: $50 \times 36 \times 20 = 36\,000\text{ cm}^3$ .
Wood: $47\,520 - 36\,000 = 11\,520\text{ cm}^3$ , option A.
