Linear & simultaneous equations

Solve for $x$ and $y$ respectively in the simultaneous equations $-2x - 5y = 3$ , $x + 3y = 0$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Make $x$ the subject of the simpler equation: $x = -3y$ .
Substitute into the first: $-2(-3y) - 5y = 3$ , so $6y - 5y = 3$ and $y = 3$ .
Then $x = -3 \times 3 = -9$ .
So $x$ and $y$ are $-9, 3$ , option C.
