The gradient of a line joining (x,4)(x, 4) and (1,2)(1, 2) is 12\frac12. Find the value of xx.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. Gradient: 4−2x−1=12\dfrac{4 - 2}{x - 1} = \frac12.
  2. Cross-multiply: x−1=2×2=4x - 1 = 2 \times 2 = 4.
