Find the sum of the roots of the quadratic equation $3x^2 + 3x - 1 = 0$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

For $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$ , the sum of the roots is $-\dfrac{b}{a}$ .
Here $a = 3$ and $b = 3$ , so the sum is $-\dfrac33 = -1$ , option A.
