Find the quadratic equation whose roots are $-1$ and 5.

Worked solution (try it first)

Roots $-1$ and 5 give the factors $(x + 1)$ and $(x - 5)$ .
Expand: $(x + 1)(x - 5) = x^2 - 5x + x - 5$
$= x^2 - 4x - 5$ .
So the equation is $x^2 - 4x - 5 = 0$ , option A.
