WAEC 2021 · Paper 1 · Q23

If 2x−3−3x−2=p(x−3)(x−2)\dfrac{2}{x - 3} - \dfrac{3}{x - 2} = \dfrac{p}{(x - 3)(x - 2)}, find pp.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. Over the LCD (x−3)(x−2)(x - 3)(x - 2), multiply each top by the other bracket: p=2(x−2)−3(x−3)p = 2(x - 2) - 3(x - 3).
  2. Expand: 2x−4−3x+92x - 4 - 3x + 9.
  3. Collect like terms: p=5−xp = 5 - x, option A.
