For what values of $x$ is $\dfrac{x - 3}{4} + \dfrac{x + 1}{8} \ge 2$ ?

Worked solution (try it first)

Multiply every term by 8, the LCM of 4 and 8: $2(x - 3) + (x + 1) \ge 16$ .
Expand and collect: $2x - 6 + x + 1 \ge 16$ , so $3x - 5 \ge 16$ .
Add 5 to both sides: $3x \ge 21$ .
Divide by 3: $x \ge 7$ , option C.
