The operation ∗* on the set R\mathbb{R} of real numbers is defined by x∗y=3x+2y−1x * y = 3x + 2y - 1. Find 3∗(−1)3 * (-1).

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. Put x=3x = 3 and y=−1y = -1 in the rule: 3∗(−1)=3(3)+2(−1)−13 * (-1) = 3(3) + 2(-1) - 1.
  2. That is 9−2−1=69 - 2 - 1 = 6, option C.
