  1. (a)

The fourth and sixth terms of a Geometric Progression (G.P.) are 54 and 486 respectively. If r>0r > 0, find the third term.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. The fourth term: ar3=54ar^3 = 54.
  2. The sixth term: ar5=486ar^5 = 486.
  3. Divide: r2=48654=9r^2 = \dfrac{486}{54} = 9, so r=3r = 3 (the ratio is positive).
  4. Then a=5427=2a = \dfrac{54}{27} = 2.
  5. The third term is ar2=2×9=18ar^2 = 2 \times 9 = 18.
