A linear transformation T is defined by T:(x,y)→(3x−y,x+4y)T: (x, y) \to (3x - y, x + 4y). Find the image of (2,−1)(2, -1) under T.

Worked solution (try it first)
  1. Put x=2x = 2 and y=−1y = -1 into the first coordinate: 3(2)−(−1)=6+1=73(2) - (-1) = 6 + 1 = 7.
  2. Second coordinate: 2+4(−1)=2−4=−22 + 4(-1) = 2 - 4 = -2.
  3. So the image is (7,−2)(7, -2), option A.
