Variation

If $x$ is inversely proportional to $y$ and $x = 2\frac12$ when $y = 2$ , find $x$ if $y = 4$ .

Worked solution (try it first)

Inverse proportion means $xy$ is constant: $k = 2\frac12 \times 2 = 5$ .
When $y = 4$ : $x = \frac54 = 1\frac14$ , option D.
